Joko Widodo Portrait removed from
Australian Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in
Canberra has removed President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo portrait from its
exhibition room following the execution of the Australian drug convicts in
Central Java on Tuesday. The gallery director, Angus Trumble, said on Thursday
the removal of the photograph, which was in the list of the National Geographic
Portrait Prize this year, was an act of precaution that “the portrait may be
defaced by someone angry about the execution of Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran
Sukumaran.” Trumble said the removal was a temporary measure and that the
photographer had been informed, kompas.com reported.The portrait was taken by
Adam Ferguson last September during a cover shoot with Jokowi for Time
Magazine. Chan and Sukumaran, known as Bali Nine drug ring leaders, was
executed on early Wednesday together with seven others convicts consisted of
the nationals of Brazil, Nigeria, Ghana and Indonesia, causing worldwide
outcry.
