U.S. President Barack Obama seems increasing certain to visit Bali in the second half of June. Read about the problems the Secret Service may encounter with monkeys and a separate link to help facilitate the world press expected to cover the visit.
Good news, of sorts, with the reversal of earlier reports and an official confirmation from North Bali that rabies HAVE NOT infected the domestic cat population. There are early indications that the laws affecting foreign property ownership in Indonesia will, despite some optimistic promises to the contrary, remain fairly restrictive. Prosecutors in Bali are seeking 18 years in prison for 8 Iranians caught with bellies full of narcotics at Ngurah Rai Airport. And, police have rescued 71 endangered green turtles and arrested a Balinese man in a raid last week on a Denpasar warehouse.
Rafting operators are pointing fingers at certain hotel operators in Ubud for pumping sewage into the Ayung River. Bali tax authorities propose a progressive tax on people owning more than one motor vehicle. Also, on the subject of taxes, many hotels and restaurants in Bali are said to mishandling the 11% tax they collect on every bill. While, in other news, traffic authorities are exploring possible changes in parking and one-way streets to help reduce congestion on Bali's roads.
