Leading the news this week: A UK tourist has died after falling from a 2nd floor balcony at a Kuta hotel. A 7-year-old Indian tourist has been found dead at the bottom of a hotel pool in Kuta. Police have arrested a housekeeping supervisor at from a boutique hotel on Jalan Drupadi in Seminyak, caught on camera stealing money from a guest’s room. A Bali lawyer has called for a corruption investigation of the management of Bali’s Garuda Wisnu Kencana Park (GWK). And, the former regent of Klungkung gets sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption committed during his terms of office.
In other news: Bali establishes “rabies centers” to help stop the rise in rabies cases. The former Deputy-minister of Tourism Sapta Nirwandar has been questioned by anti-corruption officials regarding malfeasance by former minister Jero Wacik. A peace agreement of sorts has been signed between the Sky Garden Discothèque and its former security staff. Water Police in West Nusa Tenggara are promising stricter control of fast ferries operating from Bali to the Gili Islands and West Lombok. And, Bali’s blind community unites to stage a protest over the poor and dangerous condition of the Island’s sidewalks.
The Government is promising to allow foreigners the right to own apartments costing a minimum of Rp. 5 billion.
Bali’s governor restates his opposition to a thermal power project in the Bedugul area of Bali. Meanwhile, Governor Pastika launches his published biography.
