Violent clashes erupted over the past weekend between villagers in Klungkung, northeast Bali, that left more than 40 injured and one dead. Calm appears to be restored for now; details in this week's update.
In other news . . . the managers of C-151 villas in Seminyak are in a Denpasar Court facing off against an unhappy villa owner. Bali's governor says the press is being unfair in opposing his efforts to improve the quality of life in Bali. Officials see an alarming increase in HIV/AIDS infections among Balinese children. Tax authorities are closing in on unregistered "monster" motorbike owners. And a leading Islamic youth organization in Indonesiai visit the Vatican to invite Pope Benedict XVI to speak in Bali in 2012.
Aviation coverage this week brings the welcomed news that a planned strike by Garuda pilots in September may have been averted. More confusion abounds surrounding plans for a North Bali airport. A plane destined for Bali runs into a herd of cows at the Komodo airport in Flores. And, Bali's governor causes excitement as he arrives at a meeting in West Bali by Helicopter.
Development stories we're following this week include a report that, after spending US$11.5 million on the Tanah Ampo Cruise Terminal, officials admit that only a costly breakwater and a tripling of the pier's current length will make the terminal truly viable. Negotiations are underway for the acquisition of land for Bali's underpass project. And, work is set to start on the 10-kilometer long South Bali toll way November.
Discussions are underway to increase admission charges at public tourist sites in South Bali by 1,000%.
Hotel and restaurant news tells of honors for 9 Bali eateries honored for excellence by Wine Spectator magazine and a wildcat strike last week at a South Bali hotel ironically just honored for maintaining good labor relations.
A group of cyclists will depart Bali for Bandung, West Java on September 29th to promote a national conference.
