Bali escaped the devastating destruction that befell two other locations in Indonesia this past week when a major earthquake and tsunami enveloped the shores of Mentawai island near Sumatra and the Mount Merapi volcano that exploded in Central Java. Hundreds have died and thousands have been left homeless by nature's fury. Although many miles separate the people of Bali from these two communities - prayers and feelings of affection serve to close the distances.
There's also news of the wages of crime in Bali as several foreigner face long prison sentences for their involvement with narcotics; Custom's officials drive bulldozer over 3,000 bottles of smuggled alcohol; and a hotel project in Sanur plays "chicken" with Denpasar zoning officials.
Rabies remains in the news. Bali gets a US$1.63 million from Jakarta to buy inoculations, while elsewhere officials mull the problem of dogs that can't read.
There's also more news on taxis. A recent case in Surabaya raises – by extension – questions about the legality of the monopoly on taxi transportation at Bali's airport. There's also a warning about the large number of taxis in Bali operating with uncertified taxi meters.
Governor Pastika has returned from China with an agreement in hand to build a 780 megawatt coal-driven power plant in North Bali. Spiritual tourism experts call for the halt of building of any kind in the immediate vicinity of sacred Pura Tanah Lot. And, Bali's water police successfully save a stranded whale that wandered into Benoa port.
