Bali Updates

Om Swastiastu ...

Bali is awash with interesting events over the coming days. The Sanur Village Festival has a full program of activities August 12-16. There's also a remarkable piano concert by Hee Ah Lee in Nusa Dua on August 14th in aid of UNICEF.

On August 18th you can join a dialogue on mental health in Bali led by Prof. Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani. And, there's a month-long art exhibition by artist Rie Mandala in Ubud starting on August 28.

Nusa Dua is busy this week with over 4,000 delegates attending an HIV/AIDS conference, opened yesterday by President Yudhoyono.

If you're in search of clean air, head to downtown Denpasar on Sunday, August 16th to enjoy the launch of "Car Free Sunday." Reclaim the streets, but watch out for roller-skates, cyclists and skateboarders.

There an important guest editorial - "Bali at the Crossroads." Highly recommended reading.

We've also got some snapshots from Bali's travel industry "recharge" party held last Friday at "Envy" - the beachside restaurant at the Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali.

In other news: Denpasar officials threaten a crackdown on trash burning; the Home Minister wants fewer foreign-sounding place names in Bali; Bali's new Chief of Police pledges to keep the island safe; two men involved in pedophile charges get extradited from Bali back to their homelands; and a plan to ship 10 komodo dragons to Bali has been put on indefinite hold.
