Indonesia marked 70 years of nation building today. In keeping with the august occasion in August, I share a personal reflection of a great Indonesian who was among the first to share the good news of Indonesian independence with the world in 1945. In other leading news: Bali is without a "top cop" as Ronny Sompie assumes the top job in national immigration. Bali records its 21st suicide of 2015. An estimated 160 people have died from rabies in Bali since 2008. A painful outbreak of "Blister Beetle Dermatitis" is reported in West Bali. A FBI private jet is now on route to Bali to carry a former Texas policeman back to the U.S. in connection with an open murder investigation. And, a Tajikistani tourist has been arrested for shoplifting in Kuta.
Indonesia's Minister of Tourism is the focus of growing dissent and criticism from Bali-Hindu circles for his commitment to make Bali's Mother Temple of Besakih into a National Tourism Site. Meanwhile, another popular religious site - the Tanah Lot Temple is tripling its complement of lifeguards.
There's growing complaints over poor road conditions affecting tourism in West Bali. And the head of a entrepreneurs' group in Bali has some hard-hitting comments on corruption at Bali's Airport and seaports.
Hotel News: The controversy over violations of zoning and building codes by new hotel projects in Bali continues as officials promise to conduct urgent on-site surveys. The Grand Nikko Resort has earned disaster readiness certification. Bali's PHRI chairman says 74,000 tourists cancelled their trips to Bali due to the explosion of Mt. Raung in East Java. And, a Denpasar legislator wants "City Hotels" banned from Bali's Sanur Village.
Aviation News: Indonesian AirAsia X will start flying five times a week between Sydney and Bali commencing in October.
Finally, two pieces of news from the animal kingdom: The Bali Zoo welcomes a pair of baby tigers born in Bali. And, a "strange but true" story of a Balinese politician who spiritually communes with wild animals.
