Indonesian business leader tours with a message for Australia - join Kerry at the Melbourne venues

One of Indonesia’s most influential business figures, Suryo Sulisto, is visiting Australia this week on a tour of capital cities that starts in Canberra on Thursday 5 June.

Mr Sulisto argues that trade and investment between Australia and Indonesia is being hampered by myths, misconceptions and old grudges. He will meet with federal and state leaders and take part in State of the Nation: Indonesia panel events in Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane with a common message: we need more open discussion between Australia and Indonesia.

Mr Sulisto founded the Satmarindo Group and is chairman of the peak Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, KADIN. He has built close connections throughout Indonesia’s business community, government, academia and media.

His 8-day tour has been arranged by the Australia-Indonesia Business Council in association with Asialink Business, the Australia-Indonesia Centre and the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association. His trip is being sponsored by PwC and Roy Morgan Research.

Known for his plain speaking, Mr Sulisto views Indonesia as essential to Australia’s prosperity and security. Equally, he says, Indonesia must recognise the need for partnerships if it is to transform its economy and achieve its potential. He believes no two countries are better suited for partnership than Indonesia and Australia: that the two neighbours are complementary, not in competition.

Mr Sulisto has a Bachelor Degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Business Administration from Washington University, Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate from the National Defence Institute of Indonesia.

His Satmarindo Group has diverse interests in upstream oil production and exploration, coal mining, marine and air transport, resort development and retail.

Mr Sulisto’s visit comes at a critical time for Indonesia, with the presidential election and formation of a new government just months away, and as the Australia-Indonesia relationship continues to be under scrutiny.

The State of the Nation: Indonesia events, in which Mr Sulisto will join a panel with other experts on Indonesia, will be in Canberra on 5 June, Melbourne 6 June, Brisbane 10 June and Sydney 11 June.
