We're in the midst of celebrations of the Bali Hindu religious holidays of Galungan (December 8th) and Kuningan (December 18th). This is a period when offerings and prayers are made at family and village temples, welcoming back ancestral kin who join the living for an annual visit. This is also a period of spiritual renewal when good triumphs in its eternal struggle against evil. It's a wonderful time to be in Bali, abounding with decorations and ceremonies galore.
Our top news stories this week include the confirmation of the 108th death in the ongoing rabies epidemic; the death of a young Australian man following a traffic mishap; the confiscation of thousands of bottles of illegal liquor at the Java-Bali ferry crossing; suggestions that Bali should introduce price regulation for tourism products; and safety drills on the three beaches of Bali considered most at risk to tsunamis.
We've got the latest installment of 'Bali by the Numbers' reviewing international arrival statistics through the end of October; a report on how 6,000 people recently prayed and danced on the top of volcanic Mt. Batur; concerns that changes in the fiscal tax rule effective January 1st may hurt domestic tourism; and forward movement on a proposal to build a Bali rail system.
Cruise ports are in the news this week with two articles concerning activities in East Bali to make badly needed improvements in port infrastructure.
Hotel news brings the announcement of a new 199-room luxury hotel to open in Pecatu in 2013 and coverage of the current boom in "city hotels" in Bali's capital city.
Coverage of Bali's airline beat looks at changes in the arrival hall at Bali's airport; plans to spin-off the Citilink Indonesia subsidiary of the national carrier Garuda; and an announcement from Strategic Airlines that they will start flying twice every week from Brisbane to Bali in March 2011.
