Hanura Party Won’t Quiz Timur Pradopo on Human Rights Abuse Allegations

Syarifudin Suding of the House of Representatives Commission III on law and human rights said he would not ask National Police chief candidate Comr. Gen. Timur Pradopo about human rights abuse allegations during Thursday’s fit-and-proper test. The sole police chief candidate, Timur has been widely criticized for his alleged involvement in the deadly 1998 Trisakti and Semanggi shootings. Timur was West Jakarta Police chief in 1998, and the vice commander of the Mantap Jaya III Operation, which was in charge of security operations during the fatal incidents.

Timur ignored summonses by the National Commission for Human Rights three times while the commission was investigating the shootings.

Hanura’s founder and chairman, Gen. (ret) Wiranto, was then commander of the Indonesia Military and Timur’s superior. Suding denied that his party’s decision not to quiz Timur about the 1998 tragedies was because of Wiranto’s link to Timur. “It’s
a matter of legal processes. It has nothing to do with [Wiranto],” he said.

A military court in 2001 sentenced 11 low-ranking Mobile Brigade officers for shooting demonstrators during the 1998 Trisakti incident. No higher-ranked officers have been prosecuted, despite the fact that the convicted officers testified that they were ordered to shoot. Jakarta Post
