Bali Updates
Om Swastiastu ...
I hope the busy holiday preparations has left you the time to read this week’s Bali Update.
A seasonal plankton growth has resulted in thousands of dead sardines floating up on Kuta beach; Badung zoning authorities have knocked down 18 buildings in Canggu standing in the “no build” green zone; Kuta’s new Tunes Hotel is accused of contaminating ground water by its neighbors; and pestilence on Nusa Penida bring the threat of food shortages very close to Bali.
Other news includes plans by Governor Pastika to rehabilitate the mangrove forest surrounding the Bali rubbish tip; an admission by a local motorbike dealer that as much as 75% of older big bikes in Bali are illegal; and the fears of a Karangasem legislator that the new zoning law will stagnate development in that regency.
Garuda announces plan to expand its Bali air hub in 2010; three sites in Bali are aiming for designation by UNESCO as world heritage sites; and Serangan island’s Turtle conservation and education center turns five.
If you’re being bugged by persistent time-share salespeople during your Bali holiday, read our helpful comments on how to send them packing.
For a Christmas gift that lasts forever, get a tattoo in Bali! Read about a new magazine just launched in Bali dedicated to “Magic Ink.”
Meanwhile, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik wants you to use the coming holidays to see parts of Indonesia, other than Bali and West Java. And, under no circumstances does he want to see anyone running off to Singapore for their holidays.
There’s a very unusual program of participatory art not to be missed and set to take place on the last 3 days of the year in Klungkung.
From everyone at Bali Discovery Tours, www.balidiscovery.com and www.ayokebali.com – sincere wishes for a joyful holiday season and prosperous New Year 2010.
