KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian model will be dealt six strokes of the cane for drinking beer in a nightclub, following her sentencing by a Pahang syariah court this week.
Kartika Sari Seri Shukarno, a 32-year-old Singapore permanent resident and mother of two, had pleaded guilty to the offence when she appeared before the religious court in December last year. On Monday Kartika was fined RM5,000 (S$2,000) and ordered to be caned for the offence of consuming alcohol in public. In handing down the sentence, the Pahang Syariah High Court judge noted that the rotan was provided for under state religious law.
She was caught drinking by state religious department officers during a raid on a hotel nightclub in Cherating, Pahang, in July two years ago. At the time, she was with her Singaporean husband, who was let off. It is not clear why the state religious officers decided against detaining him.
